DESTINY 2005 Demographic Estimation, Forecasting and Analysis System December 26, 2005 Setup/Installation Instructions This version (International version 3.0.01) of the DESTINY system is designed for use on which the Microsoft Access 2002 (or later) database management system is installed. If you have downloaded the DESTINY system from the Internet website (http:\\www.foundationwebsite.org ), then it is also necessary to have a copy of WinZip 8.0 (or later version) on your computer, to "unZip" the system. The system documentation is presented in Microsoft Word format (.doc file extension). The documentation is available in other file formats on the CD: Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File (.pdf extension), and hypertext markup language (HTML, .htm file extension). To read the .doc files, it is necessary to have Microsoft Word installed on your computer. To read the .pdf files, it is necessary to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed (available free from http://www.adobe.com ). The .htm files can be read by the Microsoft Internet Explorer (available on all computers using the Microsoft Windows operating system). There are three ways to install the DESTINY system. 1. Downloaded version. If you downloaded the DESTINY system as a WinZipped file from internet website http://www.foundationwebsite.org, then proceed as follows: a. Using the Microsoft Windows Explorer, navigate to the "Program Files" folder, and create a new folder named Destiny2005 (that is, the full path of this new folder is c:\Program Files\Destiny2005. b. Copy the WinZipped file (named DESTINY2005.zip) to this new folder. c. Using WinZip version 8.0 (or later), extract the WinZipped files to this same folder. d. Create a shortcut for the file named Destiny2005.mde (right click on the file and left click on "Create Shortcut"). e. Cut and paste the shortcut file (named "Shortcut to Destiny2005.mde") to the Windows desktop. f. Click on the shortcut icon on the Windows desktop to start the DESTINY program. 2. CD version, automated installation. If you have a CD containing the DESTINY system, proceed as follows (automatic installation): a. Insert the CD in your CD drive (usually drive letter D: or d:). b. Using the Windows Explorer, navigate to the CD drive, and double-click on the file named "setup.exe". c. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. In almost all instances, you will request for the system to be installed in the "default" folder, c:\Program Files\Destiny2005. d. Using the Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder in which you installed DESTINY (c:\Program Files\Destiny2005 if you accepted the default). 3. CD version, manual installation. If you have a CD containing the DESTINY system, but for some reason the "setup.exe" program did not operate correctly, then proceed as follows (manual installation): a. Insert the CD in your CD drive (usually drive letter D: or d:). b. Using the Windows Explorer, navigate to the "Program Files" folder, and create a new folder named Destiny2005 (that is, the full path of this new folder is c:\Program Files\Destiny2005). c. Copy all of the files (and folders ("subdirectories"), if any) on the CD to that new folder (navigate to the CD drive, execute Edit/Select All and Edit/Copy, Edit, and in the new folder (c:\Program Files\Destiny2005), execute Edit/Paste). d. In the installation folder, c:\Program Files\Destiny2005, create a shortcut for the file named Destiny2005.mde (right click on the file and left click on "Create Shortcut"). e. Cut and paste the shortcut file (named "Shortcut to Destiny2005.mde") to the Windows desktop. f. Click on the shortcut icon on the Windows desktop to start the DESTINY program. In the preceding installation options, it is suggested that the installation folder be c:\Program Files\Destiny2005. The DESTINY system may be installed in any folder, on any hard-disk drive to which data can be written. In any event, whatever folder or drive is used, it is necessary to construct the shortcut within that installation folder (so that the shortcut will "point" to that folder when it is clicked). The DESTINY system must be installed to a "writeable" hard drive. It cannot run directly off the CD, since Microsoft Access must be able to write to the drive on which the database is installed. The system requires about 110 megabytes of hard-drive space. It runs fast on an 1800 MHz computer with 512 megabytes of physical memory.
