Note on website organization.  From time to time I receive comments that my website "front page" is poorly organized, and that it is difficult to find new items.  There are two reasons why I have "everything" on the front page.  First, some search engines scan only the front (index) page, looking for key words.  Since I write on divers unrelated topics, the content of my front page does not "stand out," and many of the items would not be found if my front page simply linked to secondary pages.  Second, most people who access my site do so through search engines, and link directly to the item of interest without ever seeing (or being interested in) the front page, i.e., the other topics included in the site.  In consideration of those few people who actually scan my entire front page, I will place the words NEW or UPDATED in front of items posted or substantially updated in the past few months.

Can America Survive?  The thesis of this book is that when fossil-fuel reserves deplete in a few years, the global human population of Earth will drop to about 500 million people or less -- a small fraction of the current six billion.  The future is one of global ethnic war and the end of the modern industrialized world.  The book examines a "minimal regret" population strategy that shows promise as a sustainable, environmentally sound basis for world population.  This population consists of a single industrialized nation of five million people and a hunter-gatherer population of five million.  (6 June 1999, minor updates 21 November 2002 (mainly repairing of broken hyperlinks).)

NEW Notes on Immigration My view is that immigration policy should be guided by population policy, and that population policy should be designed to promote the long-term survival of the biosphere and the human race.  Over the years, I have written a number of notes and articles on immigration.  They are scattered throughout this website, and assembled here for convenience, now that the US immigration debate is "heating up.".  (22 April 2013).

UPDATED Computer program for determining sample size.  To use this program, you will need to have the Microsoft Access 2007 database management system installed on your computer.  Click here to download the program (size 1.7 MB).  Note: After downloading this program, access to it may be "blocked."  Upon trying to execute it (as Microsoft Access program), you may receive the error message: "Microsoft Access cannot open this file.  This file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site.  Microsoft Access will not open the file due to potential security problems."  To open the file, first copy it to your machine or an accessible network location.  Then, to "unblock" the program, right-click on your mouse and select "Properties."  At the bottom of the window that opens, you should see the note, "Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.  Click on the "Unblock" command button, and then click the "Apply" button.  The program should now work. (19 July 2007 .  Program updated 17 September 2013.)  (The program contains descriptive information on how to use it.  Sample sizes are determined for descriptive surveys based on analysis of the precision (standard errors) of estimates of interest (e.g., estimates of overall characteristics (totals, means, proportions) of a population or subpopulations of interest).  Sample sizes are determined for analytical surveys based on statistical power analysis.  For additional information on using statistical power analysis to determine sample size for analytical surveys, see the following article.)

UPDATED Determination of Sample Size for Analytical Surveys, Using a Pretest-Posttest-Comparison-Group Design  (Revised 9 October 2014)  The updated version of this article is no longer available from the Foundation website.  It may be accessed at Smashwords, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or other e-book distributors.

Demography: Cohort-Component Populations and Synthetic Estimation

The Destiny 2005 Estimation, Forecasting and Analysis System.  This system makes population projections and synthetic estimates based on cohort-component population projections.  It includes country-by-country population projections under various assumptions about Hubbert's Peak / Hubbert's Curve (e.g., whether the rich countries keep all of the oil for themselves after global oil production starts to decline).  The system may be applied to forecast a wide range of demographic-related phenomena, such as HIV/AIDS caseloads and budgets, school enrollments and related requirements (teachers, classrooms, supplies, textbooks), social-service caseloads and budgets, hospital beds, nursing-home facilities, and prison populations.  This "international" version is for use with the Microsoft Access 2002 database management system.  Click here to download file (very large WinZipped file -- 25 MB).  Click here for Description of Capabilities ("DC") and User's Manual ("UM"): DC.doc  DC.htm  DC.pdf  UM.doc  UM.htm  UM.pdf .      Mathematical Forecasting

Box-Jenkins Forecasting Program.  This computer program performs the analysis required to develop the most common Box-Jenkins models.  Download both the program and the sample data file.  The data must be stored in a text file (.txt), separated by commas (i.e., a "CSV" file format).  Copy the program and the sample data file into any folder on your hard drive.  If you encounter any problems, please contact me at jcaldwell9@yahoo.com .  To download the program, right-click on the following file name, and select "Save Target As...": BoxJenkinsForecastingProgram.exe .  To download the sample data file, right-click on the following file name, and select "Save Target As...": LogTicketSales.txt.  After downloading these two files, navigate to where you stored them and double-click on the program (the .exe file) (or right-click on the program and select "Open" or "Run").  When the program asks you to select the data file, navigate to where you stored it and select it.  (6 February 2009)

The Box-Jenkins Forecasting Technique.  This paper describes the Box-Jenkins forecasting technique (using autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models), and compares it to other mathematical forecasting techniques.  (28 August 2006.)

Historical Note on TIMES.  The first commercially available general-purpose Box-Jenkins forecasting program, TIMES, was developed by Joseph George Caldwell in the late 1960s and early 1970s, while he was with Lambda Corporation.  Someone inquired recently how the program was marketed.  The marketing was done principally by two mailed flyers.  Here are copies of them, and a copy of a flyer for a forecasting system (developed by Caldwell) designed to estimate stock volatility using Box-Jenkins models.

Tax Policy Analysis

The Value-Added Tax: A New Tax System for the United States proposes elimination of the personal and corporate income tax system in the United States, and replacement of the current system with one based on the value-added tax (VAT). The book describes the inadequacies of the current US tax system; its incredible complexity; its undesirable economic incentives which discourage saving, investment, and economic growth; the high administrative cost; the instability in government revenues caused by a narrow, volatile tax base; the incentive for wasting productivity in tax avoidance; the problem it causes in international trade; the invasion of privacy; and the tyranny of the IRS.  (16 November 1987, e-book edition 8 November 2000.)
