Note on website organization. From time to time I receive comments that my website "front page" is poorly organized, and that it is difficult to find new items. There are two reasons why I have "everything" on the front page. First, some search engines scan only the front (index) page, looking for key words. Since I write on divers unrelated topics, the content of my front page does not "stand out," and many of the items would not be found if my front page simply linked to secondary pages. Second, most people who access my site do so through search engines, and link directly to the item of interest without ever seeing (or being interested in) the front page, i.e., the other topics included in the site. In consideration of those few people who actually scan my entire front page, I will place the word NEW in front of items posted in the past few months.

Demography: Cohort-Component Populations and Synthetic Estimation
The Destiny 2005 Estimation, Forecasting and Analysis System. This system makes population projections and synthetic estimates based on cohort-component population projections. It includes country-by-country population projections under various assumptions about Hubbert's Peak / Hubbert's Curve (e.g., whether the rich countries keep all of the oil for themselves after global oil production starts to decline). The system may be applied to forecast a wide range of demographic-related phenomena, such as HIV/AIDS caseloads and budgets, school enrollments and related requirements (teachers, classrooms, supplies, textbooks), social-service caseloads and budgets, hospital beds, nursing-home facilities, and prison populations. This "international" version is for use with the Microsoft Access 2002 database management system. Click here to download file (very large WinZipped file -- 25 MB). Box-Jenkins Forecasting Program. This computer program performs the analysis required to develop the most common Box-Jenkins models. Download both the program and the sample data file. The data must be stored in a text file (.txt), separated by commas (i.e., a "CSV" file format). Copy the program and the sample data file into any folder on your hard drive. If you encounter any problems, please contact me at jcaldwell9@yahoo.com . To download the program, right-click on the following file name, and select "Save Target As...": BoxJenkinsForecastingProgram.exe . To download the sample data file, right-click on the following file name, and select "Save Target As...": LogTicketSales.txt. After downloading these two files, navigate to where you stored them and double-click on the program (the .exe file) (or right-click on the program and select "Open" or "Run"). When the program asks you to select the data file, navigate to where you stored it and select it. (6 February 2009)

TIMES Box-Jenkins Forecasting Technique, Reference Manual, Volume I, Technical Background. This paper describes the mathematical theory of the Box-Jenkins forecasting technique (using autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models). (7 September 2006.) (Note: This report contains many mathematical formulas, constructed using the Microsoft Equation 3.0 system of Microsoft Word 2002. For some web browsers, these formulas (819 of them) may not display properly in the hypertext (.htm) version of the report, and they are slow to "load." For this reason, this document is posted only in the Microsoft Word 2002 (.doc) and Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) versions. The paper is rather long (45 pages of technical text), so allow a minute or so for the file to download.)

Mathematical Forecasting Using the Box-Jenkins Methodology. Briefing slides for a talk about mathematical forecasting using the Box-Jenkins methods. For some web browsers, these formulas (61 of them) may not display properly in the hypertext (.htm) version of the report, and they are slow to "load." NEW Historical Note on TIMES. The first commercially available general-purpose Box-Jenkins forecasting program, TIMES, was developed by Joseph George Caldwell in the late 1960s and early 1970s, while he was with Lambda Corporation. Someone inquired recently how the program was marketed. The marketing was done principally by two mailed flyers. Here are copies of them, and a copy of a flyer for a forecasting system (developed by Caldwell) designed to estimate stock volatility using Box-Jenkins models.

A Lagrangian Approach to Customer Relationship Management: Variable-Rate Pricing Strategy. This paper describes an optimization-based approach to customer relationship management (CRM), and illustrates the methodology with an application to the problem of determining a variable-rate pricing model for banking loan products. The methodology employed to solve the problem is Everett's Generalized Lagrange Multiplier (GLM) method. (9 August 2006.)
